First 5 Santa Clara

First 5 Santa Clara is teaching families with children under the age of 5 to get their little ones to like vegetables. Through its Childhood Obesity Prevention program, First 5 Santa Clara is making fruits and veggies fun and tasty for kids.

At the Northwood Family Service Center in Santa Clara County, children and their parents learn about healthy food choices. They have a garden so the kids can help plant, harvest, and eat the food. Instructors have found fun ways, such as dressing up as vegetables, to get the message through despite the short attention spans of their audience. Kids also get to help mix up strawberries, bananas, and a little juice with spinach and kale in a blender to make smoothies that are tasty, healthy, and homemade.
